Two coal-fired 590-foot chimneys in a power plant were slated for demolition to eliminate maintenance after having been decommissioned for a few years. PULLMAN was contracted for the project.
The team began by preparing the site to ensure a safe environment and ongoing plant operations. PULLMAN performed a pre-demolition survey to determine the condition of the chimney and to confirm they would support the demolition techniques.
After removing the platforms and the brick liners, PULLMAN utilized the Spider for the main part of the demolition. This remote-controlled technology allows for a quick and safe demolition of the concrete shell. The Spider was raised using strand jacks to the top of the chimneys where it began demolition, removing all but the bottom 30 feet. The remaining portion of the chimneys were demolished by crews using ground-based equipment.
