PULLMAN
A large parking garage serving a local community in New York provides over 1,440 parking spaces for daily commuter traffic flow. The four-level parking garage’s deck was constructed in the filigree wide-slab method supported by cast-in-place concrete columns, tie-beams and footings. The owner sought repairs to the structure due to concerns regarding extensive longitudinal cracking running the length of the concrete slabs, along with reports of falling debris and leaking.
The Design Engineer and the EOR was assisted by STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES to complete the initial investigation and engineering design. Once accomplished, PULLMAN was contracted to perform the structural repairs. The scope of work included slab replacement on the elevated concrete deck, expansion joints installation, slab strengthening, waterproofing, as well as an extensive electrical system upgrade. Six sections of concrete slabs were replaced in their entirety due to extensive cracking. In addition, as an exclusive licensee of STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES, PULLMAN was able to apply approximately 100,000 SF of V-Wrap™ to strengthen the structure. Crews applied a traffic bearing membrane to 200,000 SF on the elevated concrete decks. Additional scope included fire alarm and sprinkler system redesign and carbon monoxide detection system installation.
Due to the severity of the cracking, the full depth concrete slabs were replaced in five phases. PULLMAN overcame several challenges on this project which included abiding by a tight schedule, coordinating with subcontractors, and working through scope additions and design changes.
The project was successfully completed within the three-month schedule.
