Project Team:

A leading nationwide power generation company owned a coal-fired power plant in the Midwest that housed the only two sulfur pits in its fleet. Built over a decade ago, these critical structures had never been opened or inspected. Over time, they showed signs of deterioration, including groundwater intrusion, standing water on the lids, and failed steam coils.

With limited internal experience managing sulfur pit systems, the Owner turned to a specialized team for support. Based on a proven track record of success with similar projects, PULLMAN, in collaboration with STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES, was selected.

STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES performed comprehensive internal inspections—both “dirty” and “clean”—to evaluate the condition of each pit. These assessments helped determine the best repair strategy which PULLMAN implemented. Repairs included concrete restoration using STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES’ Tstrata® ISR system, curtain wall grouting, and application of a high-performance waterproofing system.

Given the hazardous environment, stringent safety protocols and quality assurance procedures were enforced throughout the project. By leveraging an Investigate-Design-Build approach and maintaining transparent communication with the Owner, the team successfully addressed unexpected conditions and a widened project scope—ultimately completing the repairs ahead of schedule.
