Constructed for the Orlando Utilities Commission, this project involved the design and construction of a 550-foot reinforced concrete chimney with an independent acid resistant brick liner. The liner was built on a 108-foot-tall reinforced concrete pedestal with an elevated floor. These were constructed within the confines of the chimney windshield. The chimney accepts flue gas from a 10-foot by 48-foot alloy 625 breeching duct located approximately 122 feet above grade.
The interior of the brick lining has an 8-inch thick by 64-foot tall independent target wall at the breeching elevation and the interior of the chimney is equipped with several completely enclosed and individually pressurized gas sampling and monitoring rooms. These rooms are located at different elevations - from the ground floor to approximately 530 feet above the top of the foundation - and are designed to minimize any air leakage between the annular space and the enclosure. The enclosures ensure personnel safety during periodic use, inspection or maintenance of the continuous emission monitoring equipment.
An FRP cap supported by the brick liner and FRP structural shapes protect the annular space. It is sealed with an alloy wire reinforced Viton fabric at the chimney cap and breeching openings.
During construction, the project was awarded the prestigious Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Star Certification for Safety. At the time of receipt, Stanton Energy Center, Unit 2, was the only construction project in the country with the Star designation.
