Chimney & Stack Services

Since its inception in 1902, PULLMAN has completed more than 10,000 chimney, stack, and silo projects throughout the world. PULLMAN utilizes innovative, cost-effective solutions to help clients build, maintain, and upgrade their existing facilities.

Whether the need is for an efficient new chimney, compliance with emission standards, improved operating efficiencies, or correction of structural problems, PULLMAN gets the job done. Teams of experts quickly respond to meet the demands of a planned outage or emergency shutdown.

Our expertise goes far beyond that of chimneys. At PULLMAN, we design, construct, repair, and maintain industrial silos, steel stacks, hyperbolic cooling towers, and more. Our services reach into every corner of a power plant’s infrastructure.

Design & Construction

Every new project is different. PULLMAN approaches each with open-thinking, innovation, expertise and experience to create optimum design and construction solutions.

We research, evaluate and plan for all the factors that will affect design and construction. Once the column configuration and lining type has been determined, designs are carefully reviewed again to find the most functional construction process for the lowest price.

The most economical and most commonly used construction technique is jumpforming. With this traditional technique, chimneys rise by one 7'-6" lift (or jump), usually one per day.

When construction time is short or the structure exceeds the limitations of our jumpforming systems, the slipform technique is employed. With slipforming, a 1200-foot chimney column can be constructed in less than three months through continuous, around-the-clock construction. It's definitely preferred for rush situations.

Retrofit & Alteration
Many older chimneys were not designed to meet today's operating conditions or stringent safety requirements. We offer many economical solutions to help our customers adapt existing chimneys to the requirements of advanced operating conditions and safety needs. Alterations may include:

  • Structural Analysis
  • Flow Studies
  • New Openings
  • Structural Sheaths
  • Annular Pressurization Systems
  • Gas Monitoring Station
  • Gas Monitoring Equipment
  • Access Elevators
  • New Ladders & Platforms
  • Other Special Needs

Chimney repair and maintenance is a highly sophisticated service requiring specialized knowledge, engineering expertise and a diversity of experience. PULLMAN meets all of these qualifications. The company inspection teams of carefully trained and skilled professionals have completed more than 10,000 chimney projects. This outstanding record of achievement places PULLMAN in a position of leadership in the field of chimney maintenance and repair.

In addition to providing normal repairs, PULLMAN's engineers and maintenance crews welcome the challenge of solving diverse problems. The solutions can include PULLMAN repairs to steel and concrete columns and liners, the installation of new structural supports to prevent future failures, emergency guying, the replacement of both brick, shotcrete liners, restoration of accessories, and complete chimney demolition.

Emergency repairs always receive top priority and our teams are on the job promptly after receiving your authorization — frequently working "around the clock."

Chimney & Stack Demolition Services
If your chimney, stack or silo is at the end of its useful life, PULLMAN can also provide demolition capabilities. Demolishing a chimney is not only challenging, but also potentially more costly than the original construction. PULLMAN provides experience and a reputation that provides the security of safe, efficient and cost-effective demolition.
